Advent in Baranja

Dear guest,

We invite you to visit us during the month of December in the time of Advent and visit some of the many interesting holiday events that take place in the east Croatian region of Baranja.

You might think that Advent in Baranja is just one of many similar Christimas fairs that can be seen all around Central Europe and you’d be right but there is a twist – come and see how Christmas is celebrated in the region located “in the middle of the Danube”!

Visit the "Christmas market" in the town of Beli Manastir on the 1st and 15th of December. In the main square see the living decorated Christmas tree, listen to Christmas carols, stroll thru the many stands offering different local crafts products, have some mulled wine or take a nice romantic ride in a Lipizzaner horse carriage.

On the 7th and 8th of December visit the "Zimski vašar" (Winter fair). Visit the local museum and see how Christmas was celebrated in the past of this beautiful old village. In the many stands look for crafts such as typical gingerbread hearts called “licitar”, wooden toys, cakes, schnapps (rakija), wine and all kinds of smoked meat products for which this region is famous for. In the fair try the Čvarci, so called “baranja-chips” made from pork beloved thru south-eastern and central Europe. Also visit the Christmas concert in the local church and listen the Croatian Christmas music, for which many say it is the most beautiful in the World, played on the pipe-organs made by the famous local musical instruments producer Josef Angster whose work can be seen in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris!

We also invite you to visit the “Kristkindl Markt” on the 21st of December. In this traditional Christmas fair in the beautiful little wine village of Zmajevac you will see the centuries old tradition of carolling called “Christkindl” where the locals dress like little angels and visit their friends. Visit the cute traditional wine cellars in the so-called wine streets which are for this occasion turned into a beautiful Christmas fair. While there do not forget to taste not only mulled wine but also try the wine for which this region is famous for!

Sencerely Yours, the Baranja tourist office team,

Željka, Jasmina, Beata i Mislav
